Types Of Depression.

When people consider depression, they often divide the disorder into two. To those people, it could either be clinical depression which requires a form of treatment. Or “regular” depression that nearly everyone goes through.

As a medical condition, however, depression can be an incredibly difficult concept to grasp. From a medical perspective, depression can be defined as a mood disorder which ignites a certain feeling of sadness which is associated with loss of interest in things that would typically give pleasure or satisfaction. Depression can affect how someone feels, thinks, and behaves. This could interfere with the general ability to function in the everyday life of a person.

There are many different types and causes of depression, some of which aren’t even entirely understandable by medical professionals itself. The most common include:

  1. Major Depressive Disorder. (Also referred to as Clinical depression).
The following features characterize this type of depression:
    • Depressed mood.
    • Lack of interest.
    • Weight changes.
    • Changes in sleep.
    • Fatigue.
    • Thoughts of suicide.
    • Feeling of worthlessness.
  2. Persistent Depressive disorder. (Also known as Dysthymia).
This is a chronic depression which may persist from a few days to many years. It can range from mild, moderate, to severe,

  1. Bipolar Disorder.
This disorder is characterized by abnormally extreme moods of either elevation (mania) or a significant low (depression). In extreme cases, hallucinations and delusions may also occur in extreme cases.
  2. Postpartum depression.
Post pregnancy can bring significant shifts in women moods. It can range from lethargy and sadness all the way to postpartum psychosis which may cause hallucinations or delusions and confusion.
  3. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
This form of depression generally occurs during the winter season. SAD is known to be triggered by a disturbance in the circadian rhythm of the body.

If an individual is suffering from these disorders, merely sitting around and hoping it would go away isn’t something that should be done. In fact, another thing to keep in mind is that these disorders shouldn’t be dealt with alone either. People who are suffering from any kind of mental condition require professional help and treatment from a qualified psychiatrist.
